10 Common Skincare Misconceptions

  1. Skincare is for only women. Skincare is for everyone; man or woman. Everyone that has skin should take care of it because the skin is the largest organ of the body. It serves as a protective shield.
  2. Sunscreen is to be applied only when going under the sun. Sunscreen should be applied even while indoors provided it’s daytime because UV rays can penetrate windows.
  3. Layering several products with SPF ratings increases protection. An SPF15 sunscreen blocks 93% of UVB radiation while SPF30 blocks 97% and SPF50 blocks 98%. A foundation with an SPF of 15 and sunscreen with an SPF of 20 does not yield an SPF rating of 35. The higher SPF rating would do the protection. No matter what SPF you use, you’ll need to reapply every 2-3 hours and after excessive sweating or swimming.  *Read: The Sun And Your Skin
  1. Natural or organic products are the best. Oftentimes, active ingredients have to be synthesized to be bioavailable and effective. These synthesized ingredients can actually be identical to those found in nature yet more effective. They are also tested to ensure safe concentrations for use on the skin. This is probably first on the list of common skincare misconceptions in Nigeria.
  2. If it stings or burns then it’s working. Some topical skincare ingredients used for treating skin concerns and conditions can sting when used for the first time, for example – benzoyl peroxide, although not everyone experiences this. If stinging or burning continues and lasts more than a couple of seconds to minutes, this could be bad for the skin.
  3. The harder you scrub, the more dead skin cells are removed. Excessive scrubbing of the skin could lead to irritation and bruises on the skin giving rise to other skin concerns such as hyperpigmentation of the affected parts.
  4. Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer. People who have oily skin tend to avoid using moisturizers. Some avoid moisturizers for fear of breaking out. An appropriate moisturizer for oily skin can help balance oil and moisture levels in the skin and reduce oiliness and breakouts.
  1. Pores open and close. Pores are openings in the skin that allow sebum and sweat to reach the surface. Larger pores can be due to genetics, accumulated dead skin cells, excess sebum or scarring. Pores may appear smaller after dead skin cells or excess sebum trapped within the pores have been decongested.
  2. Using more quantities of a product yields better results. If the skin needs only 1ml of a product, even if you apply 10ml of that product, only 1ml would be absorbed by the skin and the extra 9ml would be wasted and in some cases cause harm to the skin.
  3. Alcohol in skincare products is bad. Not all alcohol in skincare is bad. Some alcohols in skin care products help to decrease the skin’s water loss. Cetyl and benzyl alcohol are examples of good alcohols in skincare products.
